Why Serverless?

October 12, 2022

In the serverless space, I've heard many people ask:  “Why should we move to the cloud?” and “Why would we go serverless?” Both are great questions, and in this article, I'm going to detail why I believe going serverless is the best infrastructure for your organization through business optimization, cost savings, time to market, less overhead, and more. Follow me as I give detailed explanations to each of these points~ Let us dive in!

Business Optimization

Business optimization is important for you and your company to consider because it is the process in which you improve efficiencies, performance, and all-around productivity within your company. I'm sure you’re wondering, “What does serverless have to do with this?” Serverless improves your business by reducing overhead costs over time which leads to less management of your infrastructure, and a lot less stress! Your typical legacy developer spends the majority of their day-to-day work managing the on-premise infrastructure, and only a small portion on being innovative and writing new code. Meanwhile, serverless developers spend most of their time being innovative, and only a small amount of their time managing and reviewing their code. This is powerful because your business will succeed just by moving from your legacy systems to the cloud, not only will you gain the majority of your time back, but you will have a lot less maintenance to undergo.

Cost Savings

Cost savings is one of the most critical things to a business because everything within your company revolves around finances and budgets. By using an on-premise infrastructure you pay for your data centers which can be very costly, not to mention you may never even use the full capacity of that server. For instance, after you pay for the hardware, battery systems, backup solutions, etc. and you'll be tens of thousands of dollars into that system. Meanwhile, when you choose the cloud, everything is included (except account set-ups) which will save you thousands upon thousands of dollars from the start. Not to mention with your on-premise infrastructure, you have monthly maintenance costs once everything is set up, which can add up quickly. On AWS, you pay as you go and only pay for what you use. If you need to scale up suddenly, your cost will increase, but when you drop your usage, your bill goes down as well. You only pay for what you use, that's why serverless is so cost-effective not only in the beginning but long term.

Now, there are still servers involved, but the cloud provider manages them for you. This infrastructure reduces your upfront and maintenance overhead and also allows your developers to spend the majority of their time writing code and being innovative as mentioned previously. This is very important because the more time your developer has to code, the more they get done and the faster projects get completed.

Time to Market Strategy

Time to market strategy is just as important as costs and business optimization because if you're not hitting your deadlines, you're not being efficient. Most companies run into a panic when deadlines creep in because of the “unknowns”; meaning the things that occur randomly and out of control, that’s why it is essential to plan accordingly. The serverless applications you build will scale automatically, and the same goes for the instances involved within the applications. The reason serverless architecture allows you to put things into production so much faster is that your developers do not have to send their code to the server to be released, they just upload it, and boom. The time it takes to put a new project into production has been reduced by 30% using serverless. Turning a one-year project into potentially eight months allows you to have around four months more time to devote to your next project. Coca-Cola tested this on a project using IAAS vs Serverless and they were 30% faster using serverless technologies. [1]

Conclusion

In this article, I explained how serverless would increase efficiencies by speeding up projects because the developer has more time to write code and put things into production. I talked about how serverless technologies will speed up your time-to-market strategy by completing projects in 30% less time. I also covered how serverless will save you overhead costs with the “pay as you go” pricing model instead of paying for your on-prem infrastructure all at once and upfront! Once you choose serverless adoption, you will never look back. Let's change the world and show others why serverless is the best choice for your business!
